Steve Dettelbach ’88

Gun Control

Dettelbach is set to become the first Senate-confirmed director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives since 2013. According to the Washington Post, his biggest goals and challenges heading the agency will be around stemming gun violence in the U.S.

The Post notes that the National Rifle Association has called Dettelbach “anti-gun,” and the National Sports Shooting Foundation, the firearms industry’s trade group, has “significant concerns” about his support for measures like universal background checks. Gun control advocates, in contrast, supported his nomination to lead the ATF.
