Jennifer Carlson ’04

Genius Grant

Carlson is one of 25 recipients of this year's MacArthur Fellowships—also known as “genius grants.”

The MacArthur Foundation described Carlson, a professor at the University of Arizona and author of three books, as “a sociologist reconfiguring our understanding of gun culture in the United States. Through ethnographic research with gun owners, educators, and sellers; law enforcement; and state licensing bodies, Carlson investigates the motivations and assumptions that drive gun culture.”

In a 2016 interview with DAM, she said: “Sometimes I’m painted as a gun-rights advocate, other times my work is used to buttress gun-control points. I choose not to align myself with either side of the debate. Although I came away from my research with a much better appreciation of why Americans embrace guns, I think the labels of ‘pro-gun-rights’ or ‘pro-gun control’ often do more harm than good in terms of moving the public conversation about guns forward.”
