Seaver Peters ’54

Seaver Peters ’54 passed away on February 23 in White River Junction, Vermont. Seaver came to Dartmouth from Melrose, Massachusetts, where he attended Melrose High School. At Dartmouth he majored in economics, was a brother at Phi Gamma Delta, and was a member of Sphinx, Press Club, and Air Force ROTC. He skated on the undefeated freshman hockey team and on the varsity first line during the following three years, serving as captain in his senior year. After serving in the military he returned to Hanover as Dartmouth’s assistant comptroller. He became an assistant athletic director, coached freshman hockey, and was named athletic director in 1967. He chaired the NCAA television committee, founded the Hanover Youth Hockey Association, helped plan and raise funds for the local James W. Campion Rink, and spurred interest in replacing the College’s 45-year-old Davis rink. He achieved the building of the iconic Rupert C. Thompson Arena on campus, founded Friends of Dartmouth Hockey in 1976, chaired the ECAC playoff selection committee, and helped create the women’s hockey program. He stepped down as AD in 1983 and was enshrined in the Legends of New Hampshire Hockey Hall of Fame. He received the Class of 1954 Award. He wintered in Palm Coast, Florida, where he regularly played golf with Skip Abbey ’54. In 2004 Seaver was inducted into Dartmouth’s prestigious Wearers of the Green athletic hall of fame. Seaver resided in an assisted-living complex in Lebanon, New Hampshire, in recent years. He is survived by his six children.
