Sally Adnopoz Gendler ’82

Sally Adnopoz Gendler ’82 died on April 22, 2020, of secondary acute myeloid leukemia. As Ralph McDevitt ’82 recalled, “Sally battled cancer with poise and equanimity. Throughout her treatment, Sally seemed to inspire us along the way with her positive attitude and zest for life.” Sally was born in Hamden, Connecticut, and attended Hopkins Day Prospect Hill School. Dartmouth family include her father, Robert ’54, and brother Stephen ’78. At Dartmouth Sally played varsity lacrosse and joined Sigma Kappa. She studied French abroad and education in Boston. Sally majored in psychology and education. Following graduation Sally was a production assistant for ABC’s Wide World of Sports, including Monday Night Football and the Professional Golf Association tour. After leaving television production, she earned an Ed.M. and M.S. in Special Education from Bank Street College of Education. In 1989, Sally married Steven Gendler and moved to Philadelphia where she became passionate about environmental issues, especially horticulture and gardening. Active in the Garden Club of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society as a frequent prize winner and judge, she combined her knowledge of horticulture with her love of teaching to create an innovative community-based program for children and parents. Sally served the class in many capacities, including as mini-reunion chair and newsletter editor. Please consider a donation in Sally’s memory to either the Dartmouth Center for Social Impact (Philadelphia internship program) or the Sally Jane Gendler Youth Endowment Fund at the Morris Arboretum.
