Roy Michael McClain ’66

Roy Michael McClain ’66 died September 12, 2022, at his home in Anderson, South Carolina. Born July 12, 1944, in Washington, D.C., Michael grew up in West Virginia, where in high school he excelled in both football and basketball. At Dartmouth he was a member of Sigma Nu and played rugby. After his sophomore year Michael enlisted in the Army and served one tour in Vietnam. He then attended officer candidate school, was commissioned a second lieutenant, and served two more tours in Vietnam. He left the Army in 1969 as a captain and received two Purple Hearts and four Bronze Stars for his service. After leaving the Army Michael returned to Dartmouth, where he majored in economics and graduated in 1971. Upon graduation he moved to Brisbane, Australia, where he worked as an economist, married, and raised a family. He returned to the United States in 1996 and coached rugby in New Jersey, eventually moving to North Carolina, where he met his future wife, Renee. Michael loved Celtic music and was a longtime luthier. He loved horses and was an accomplished farrier. Michael is survived by Renee, children Megan and Glenn, and five grandchildren.
