Roland Barker Jr. ’52

Roland Barker Jr. ’52 of South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, passed away on January 23 at home. Roland was born on March 29, 1930, in Montclair, New Jersey, graduated from Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, and entered Dartmouth. He left the College to serve in the US Air Force and then returned to earn a degree in English and education. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi. He later earned a master’s from Columbia University. Roland’s career as an English teacher and sports coach began in the Northport (Long Island), New York, school district and spanned more than 30 years, mostly in the same school. He and Beverly Anne Robie were married in 1952; she predeceased him in 2010. With the exception of college and military service, he always returned to a family home on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with his family several times a year. Once permanently settled on the Cape, Roland continued his love of baseball, joining one of the great local leagues, the Cape Senior Softball League, where he excelled as a pitcher and forged a great number of friendships. He is survived by son Steven; son James and his wife, Jennifer; son Jeffrey; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and Annie, his companion in his final years. His father, Roland ’24, uncle Dale, class of 1915, and cousins Richard ’54 and John ’91 were Dartmouth graduates.
