Robert S. Shertz ’65

Robert S. Shertz ’65 passed away peacefully in his home in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on September 28, 2018. Rob was born in Long Beach, California, and grew up in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he would return after graduating Dartmouth. He came to the College from the Haverford School and Harriton High School, where he participated in debate, newspaper, squash, and the glee club. At Dartmouth Rob majored in English and joined Bones Gate. Classmate Dave Milkowski remembers, “Rob directed Bones Gate’s productions for the inter-fraternity play competition in our junior and senior years and fished me into acting in them, Hicks, too, as I recall.” Classmate Bill Hicks notes, “Rob was an uncredited co-producer of the weekly house minutes,” when Bill served as house secretary during senior year. After graduation, Rob joined Matlack Inc., ultimately becoming president and chief operating officer. He left Matlack in 1984 to serve as the CEO of Chemical Leaman Tank Lines, where he became chairman. The West Chester Daily Local News obituary noted that Rob’s “true passion for classic literature, poetry, and writing served as a source of endless wisdom and guidance to those who knew him.” Rob was a private person, enjoying traveling, golf, and collecting antiques. He was devoted to sisters Carol, Nancy, and Laurie and nieces and nephews Page, Anne, Kirsten, Melissa, Geoffrey, Matthew, and Courtenay.
