Robert Orlaf Halbert ’59
Robert Orlaf Halbert ’59 died on February 23. He entered Dartmouth from South High School in Denver, majored in sociology and was a member of Kappa Sigma and Dragon. He was in the Navy ROTC program and elected to be commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps. Bob and his wife, Jean, were married in June 1959 following his graduation from Dartmouth and hers from Colby Junior, and they returned to Denver in 1962 following his military service. He then began a long career in the insurance industry. After almost 10 years with Equitable Life of Iowa, he joined United Bank Insurance Services, a reinsurance company of which he served as chairman and CEO until retiring in 2002. He was an active volunteer and board member for a number of nonprofit organizations in the Denver area and, following retirement, served as an arbitrator for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. He was also an active member of the Dartmouth Association of the Rocky Mountains, serving in a number of capacities, including as president. Bob was an avid golf player, always striving for the perfect round, which he described as “two greens in regulation and four pars.” He leaves Jean, sons John and Mark and their spouses, five grandsons, brother David and cousin Donald McMichael ’53.
