Robert Hugh McGrath ’54

Robert Hugh McGrath ’54 passed away on March 12 at the home of his granddaughter in Laconia, New Hampshire. Bob came to Dartmouth from Laconia High School and after graduation returned to his hometown, where he lived the remainder his life. He majored in history and was a member of Beta Theta Pi. He was the third baseman all four years and was varsity co-captain his senior year, when he also received All-Ivy honors. Bob had a rich and varied career, working in insurance, real estate, building contracting, and serving as Laconia High School tennis coach. In the late 1960s Bob served as president of the Dartmouth alumni club in the area. In his pre-Dartmouth years he was a Boy Scout and lifeguard. Bob had a sailboat on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire, that was somewhat jokingly referred to as “Captain Blye.” He was an avid tennis player and reader and loved doing jumble and crossword puzzles. Bob is survived by his wife of 64 years, Donna; children Ellen, Mary, and Thomas; siblings Leo and Mary; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
