Robert H. Meyers ’51

Robert H. Meyers ’51, a longtime resident of New Jersey, died at his home in Little Silver on April 29, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Mary, four sons, and 11 grandchildren. At Dartmouth Bob majored in American literature, was a member of Delta Upsilon, and was active with WDCR, the College radio station. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany following graduation. His business career was spent selling printing and publication papers. He retired as a vice president and director of Walter D. Peek Jr. & Sons, a paper brokerage in New York City. A winsome, gregarious gentleman, he developed a legion of fond, admiring, trusting friends among his customers. Bob’s classmate, Pete Henderson, recalls a warm late-in-life friendship that grew out of a typically thoughtful letter written by Bob in praise of a column Pete had written as class secretary. Pete wrote back, Bob responded, and a rare open, sharing phone and written relationship ensued. Bob loved old movies and recalled with delight favorite scenes and verbatim dialog from innumerable classic films. Thoroughbred racing was another passion. Bob confessed to having capitalized on his business travels to spend treasured afternoons at the track. Phone calls became especially animated after a major race or a photo finish. Bob was a true gentleman whose humble, generous, positive relationships enriched the lives of family members and friends alike.
