Robert Earl Cleveland II ’55

Robert Earl Cleveland II ’55 died June 6 in Cary, North Carolina. From Marine Corps officer to Presbyterian minister, Bob had a career filled with service to others. Bob came to Dartmouth from Henry Grady High School in Atlanta, majored in philosophy, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Dragon. He also played football and lacrosse. After graduation, Bob completed the Marine Corps officers training program and started a 24-year career as a Marine Corps officer. Overseas duty included two tours in Vietnam and posts in Okinawa, Guantanamo, and Germany. He was an intelligence officer for the U.S. European Command before retiring in 1979. Bob then earned a master of divinity degree from Duke University. He became a pastor for a small Presbyterian Church in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Bob is survived by Mary Jane, his wife of 64 years; daughters Beth and Susan; sons Robert and Wayne; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
