Robert D. Shannon ’51

Robert D. Shannon ’51 died on July 25 in Stamford, Connecticut. He was an intensely loyal Dartmouth alumnus who took pride in the fact that two of his daughters, Cindy ’76 and JoAnn ’85, also earned degrees from the College. Grandsons Luke Antal ’07 and Mark Antal ’11 are also Dartmouth graduates. Bob earned a degree in mechanical engineering and was a member of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers and Beta Theta Pi. In later years he was active in the Dartmouth Club of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and as an alumni admissions interviewer. Bob spent most of his career as a civil engineer with the Clark Construction Co. in Bridgeport, rising to become its vice president. He was also active in the communities in which he lived, serving the town of Easton road committee, the Exchange Club of Easton, Norwich Technical College, and as a justice of the peace in the town of Easton. He and his wife, Joan, spent winters in North Palm Beach, Florida, where warm friendships with the “Florida Gang” brightened their days. Family was the centerpiece of Bob’s life. He was a dedicated caregiver during Joan’s eight-year terminal illness. He delighted in the company of his four daughters, 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.
