Rick Ian Suberman ’65

Rick Ian Suberman ’65, M.D., J.D., died June 25 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, after a protracted hospitalization. Rick came to Dartmouth from Raleigh, North Carolina. He took premed courses at Dartmouth and transferred to North Carolina State University. He graduated from the University of North Carolina Medical School and served on the faculties of University of North Carolina and Duke University medical centers. He then cofounded Chapel Hill Radiology, a well-respected private practice. After practicing radiology for more than 20 years, Rick pursued his interest in the law and earned a law degree at the age of 50. Rick worked as both a doctor and a lawyer for the last 20 years of his career, playing golf most afternoons and frequently shooting his age. In addition to medicine and law, Rick became a prominent restaurateur; Bob’s Ice Cream and Aurora Restaurants were among his projects, as was statewide Mexican restaurant chain Papagayo. Rick and Karen were married in 1998, after which Rick marked special occasions by gifting animals. Their farm evolved from a simple horse stable to a menagerie of animals, including llamas, peacocks, miniature donkeys, fainting goats, chickens, dogs, and potbellied pig Irma. Rick is survived by Karen; children Abigail, Thomas, and Sophie; Karen’s children Karen, Gwynn, and Lauren; his grandchildren; and former spouses Christine and Jan.
