Richard Weller Strehle ’60

Richard Weller Strehle ’60 of Frankfurt, Germany, died at home June 3. Richard was born July 21, 1938, in Litchfield, Illinois, to George W. and Edith Strehl and graduated from Litchfield High School with the class of 1956. At Dartmouth, Richard worked for three years on The Dartmouth and was its treasurer in his senior year. He also served four years on the Winter Carnival Committee and the Skating Club and was its publicity director. He graduated with a major in economics in 1960. After working in the financial sector in New York City and London, he settled in Frankfurt. For 20 years he was employed at Deutsche Bank and Deutsche Assessment Management until his retirement. Each year in his 20-year retirement, he would travel to live for one month in Italy studying Italian and gourmet cooking and resuming playing flute and piano. He traveled throughout Europe using his three acquired languages, German, French, and Italian. He taught English to foreigners and became a duplicate bridge player director. Prior to a new artificial left knee, Richard enjoyed two sports he learned at Dartmouth: skiing and mountain trekking. He also played tennis and golf. For years he served as a liaison for the Dartmouth Alumni Club of Germany, leading a hike of students through nearby vineyards each spring and each winter interviewing Dartmouth candidates from the Rhein-Main area of Germany. He will be remembered by his Dartmouth friends.
