Richard Proctor O’Neill ’52

Richard Proctor O’Neill ’52 of South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, passed away on February 9. Dick was a graduate of West Orange High School in New Jersey, where he excelled academically and in sports. He then entered Dartmouth, graduating with a degree in economics. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi and a varsity letterman in basketball. Following graduation he entered the U.S. Army, serving from 1952 to 1954 in Korea. Dick, discharged with the rank of sergeant first class, was awarded a Bronze Star. He then embarked on a 34-year career as a senior marketing and sales executive at American Can Co., working in several Eastern cities. Dick retired in 1999 to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he was active with local community organizations. He served as treasurer of Yarmouth Citizens for Responsible Development; on the board of directors for Pine Oaks Village, a community of low-income housing for senior citizens; and as president and board member of Par Three Estates Homeowners Association. He also served many years in a variety of roles at the First Congregational Church in Harwich, Massachusetts. He and Patricia Barbour, his wife of 45 years, were married in 1958. She predeceased him in 2003. Dick is survived by his longtime partner, Joyce; son Tim; son Rick and his wife, Sharon; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Dick’s father, the late Clifford, class of 1917, and his brother, David ’51, were both Dartmouth graduates.
