Richard Hawley McMahon ’52
Richard Hawley McMahon ’52 of Rome, New York, passed away on December 4, 2016. He was born on July 3, 1930, and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1948. He earned an engineering degree from Dartmouth in 1952 and a master’s from Thayer School in 1953. He was a member of Sigma Chi and Green Key and a varsity hockey letterman. He married the former Ruth McLaughlin on September 12, 1953. Ruth passed away on August 23, 1998. Dick worked at Revere Copper and Brass Co. for four years after graduating from college and then went on to Cornell University Law School, graduating in 1960. Dick joined his father as a member of the McMahon and Grow law firm in 1964, making him a fifth-generation family practitioner. Dick was very active in the Rome community. He served as the treasurer for the Rome Bar Association from 1966 to 2001. A community activist, Dick served on several local boards and was a trustee of St. Peter’s Church, charter member of the parish council, and helped start a hockey team, serving as an assistant coach at Rome Catholic High School. He was a director of Rome Savings Bank and former chairman of loan committee of the Rome Industrial Development Corp. and he was a 15-gallon donor of the American Red Cross Blood Bank. He is survived by children Pam, Mary Ellen, Richard Jr., Timothy, Johnson, Joseph and Christopher; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
