Richard E. Lindseth ’57

Richard E. Lindseth ’57 of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on May 4. Dick graduated from East High School in Denver. He majored in zoology, was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, and a member of the Dartmouth Christian Union and the Dartmouth Outing Club. He spent his summers on a survey crew at Yellowstone National Park. Dick received his diploma from Dartmouth Medical School in 1958 and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1960. He served as a medical officer for the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1962 to 1964, touring the Pacific and the Caribbean. Returning to civilian life, he moved to Indianapolis in 1967 with wife Marilyn to accept positions with the Indiana University School of Medicine, James Whitcomb Riley Children’s Hospital, Richard L. Roudebush V.A. Medical Center, and the Wishard Memorial Hospital. A pioneer in the field of pediatric orthopedic surgery, his lifelong dedication to patient care and advancement of medical knowledge led to the publishing of more than a hundred conference abstracts, proceedings, and manuscripts. He served as chair of the department of orthopedic surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine from 1995 to 2001. He continued to teach as professor emeritus until his retirement in 2003. A dedicated gardener, learner, and world traveler, Dick was known for his compassion and deep faith. Nothing made him happier than the smile of a child. He was preceded in death by Marilyn and son Erik and is survived by daughter Ellen, granddaughter Danica, and grandson Trevor.
