Richard Berkowitz ’63

Richard Berkowitz ’63 died on December 31, 2021, of a rare blood disease. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on June 28, 1941, and was the first member of his family to attend college. At Dartmouth Dick received majored in sociology and was active on the Interfraternity Council, as president of Pi Lambda, and as a member of Sphinx. He earned his law degree from the University of Connecticut. Dick served as class president (1993-98), a member of the executive committee (1969-2015), gift planning chair, and in several other class roles. In addition, he was a member of the Alumni Council (2003-06) and chair of its executive committee (2006-07). He was also president of his regional club 1978-1982. Although it would seem his Dartmouth-related workload would preclude other activities, Dick practiced law in Westport, Connecticut, for 55 years, most of the time as managing partner of his firm, Berkowitz, Trager & Trager. He served as president of the Kiwanis Club, Birchwood Country Club, and Connecticut and Westport bar associations and was a member of the Westport town meeting and planning commission. He was a mentor for Champions for Learning in Naples, Florida, and a founder of New Heights Youth, a New York City nonprofit. He was a coach of Pop Warner, Little League, baseball, softball, and basketball in Westport. Dick is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carole, four children (two of whom attended Dartmouth), and nine grandchildren.
