Richard Arden Guilford ’60

Richard Arden Guilford ’60 of Portland, Michigan, was born on March 12, 1938, and died in Bonita Springs, Florida, on July 25 from the effects of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. His wife, Sue Ann, whom he married 59 years ago, was at his side. Rick’s care of his family was the primary passion of his life. He is also survived by daughters Andrea, Pauline, and Jennifer; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by daughter Katrin. Rick was valedictorian of his graduating class at Sturgis (Michigan) High School. At Dartmouth he served as president of Sigma Phi Epsilon and was a member of the Undergraduate Council and Green Key, treasurer of the Air Society, broadcast supervisor for WDCR, and a member of the Air Force ROTC. After graduation he earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1963. He served as a judge advocate general officer for the Air Force in Panama City (Florida) and then initiated his lifelong career practicing law in Lansing, Michigan. He was a member of the Michigan and Florida bar associations and the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a critical thinker with a lifelong love of learning and constantly sought new educational opportunities, devouring books and lectures on various concepts. He was a founding member of Peninsula Writers in Michigan. He and Sue Ann relished their international travel adventures. They retired to Bonita Springs, where, from 2005 to 2019, Rick served as an admissions ambassador for the College.
