Richard Anthony Pender ’79

Richard Anthony Pender ’79 passed away unexpectedly on July 18 from a pulmonary embolism. He was 65. Rich was born on July 26, 1957, in Mineola, New York, and graduated from Garden City High School. He followed his father and grandfather to Dartmouth, where Rich majored in government and joined the Harold Parmington Foundation (HPF), serving as treasurer and on the social committee. Rich was a member of the Marching Band, with his bass drum proudly festooned with a “D” on one side and “Hi Mom” on the other. Rich earned his M.B.A. from Boston University and worked in finance until his retirement as a managing director for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. Rich met the love of his life, Denise Dauphin, in Virginia and was married in 2002, with nine HPF brothers in attendance, including best man Brendan Cameron ’79. Rich cherished and worked to maintain his relationships with his HPF brothers. He was the “glue” that brought them together, including at Frozen Four hockey events he organized in different cities every winter since 2015. Rich had the warmest heart and never stopped giving to friends and family. He was an active member in Boy Scouts as a youth and later as an assistant den and scoutmaster; son Ian and daughter Riley reached the rank of Eagle Scout. Rich lived his life by the Scout oath and law. He is survived by Denise and children Riley, Ian, and Alexis (and her family).
