Rand N. Stowell ’64
Rand N. Stowell ’64 died in South Freeport, Maine, on July 12, 2018, after a long illness. He was born and raised in Dixfield, Maine, a mill town of 2,300 residents, which was settled by Rand’s ancestors soon after the American Revolution. Leaving his high school class of 18 students after two years, Rand graduated from Kimball Union Academy before attending Dartmouth. Perhaps with a sense of history instilled by his family’s involvement in Maine through centuries, he majored in history at Dartmouth. He served on the Outing Club directorate and the Winter Carnival Council, taught skiing, and directed winter sports races. Preceded at Dartmouth by 21 relatives and succeeded by another 18, he was steeped in the history and traditions of the College. Yet Hanover was a far cry from Dixfield, and he found the transition daunting at first. He prevailed, however, and went on to graduate from Boston University School of Law. Upon the unexpected death of his father, he became president of the family-owned United Timber Corp., which acquired extensive land holdings in Maine and operated several subsidiaries. Rand enjoyed politics and several Maine governors sought his counsel. He served on the committee that produced Maine’s Tree Growth Tax Law, the Maine Development Foundation, and the Dartmouth College Grant committee. He also served as trustee of the Cardigan Mountain School, founded by his mother’s family. He is survived by Susan, his wife of 38 years, sons Barrett and Whitney, and two brothers.
