Peter A. Zimmerman ’82

Peter A. Zimmerman ’82, M.D., J.D., passed away unexpectedly on June 23, 2017. Peter came to Dartmouth from the Waldorf School in Garden City, New York. After graduating from Dartmouth he received his M.D. from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and his J.D from Fordham University School of Law. He practiced interventional spine pain management in New Orleans and several nearby locations. Peter is remembered for his intelligence, humor, generosity and compassion. Professor Ronald M. Green recalls Peter “as a wonderfully zealous student with a strong interest in biomedical ethics at an early time in the emergence of that field.” Classmate J.B. Friday met Peter in “Biology 5” lab: “Peter and I were determined to not only pass but to not let the course get us down. I remember Peter’s humor during the inevitable snafus in lab and other trials.” Like many classmates, Stephen Hathcock reconnected with Peter on Facebook. Stephen shared, “Peter noticed my having posted something about my back surgery, and he went out of his way to look me up and call. He was very generous with his listening, understanding and advice. We had a series of lovely chats.” Peter is survived by his parents, Alan and Marcia, sisters Paula and Andrea, many nieces and nephews and girlfriend Ellen Sands. Contributions in his memory for the “Peter A. Zimmerman Award for Academic and Intellectual Excellence” may be made to the Waldorf School of Garden City, 225 Cambridge Ave., Garden City, NY 11530.
