Pete was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, and attended Brockton High School, where he was co-captain of the basketball and tennis teams. At Dartmouth he majored in government and was a brother of Phi Delt. Pete was an active outdoorsman, a member of the Dartmouth Outing Club, and director of winter sports as well as a member of the ski patrol. He was also a member of the Undergraduate Council and Air Force ROTC. After Dartmouth he received a degree in business from the University of New Hampshire and then joined the Marine Corps as an aviator, retiring in 1984 as a lieutenant colonel, having served two tours in Vietnam. He moved to New Hampshire and was active in a family company, Shaw’s Supermarkets, and as a trustee of its Davis Educational Foundation. Pete’s enthusiasm for the outdoors continued all his life; he summited all of the New Hampshire White Mountains greater than 4,000 feet in the winter.
