Ostap Wasyl Kortschmaryk ’82

Ostap Wasyl Kortschmaryk ’82 of Hamilton, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on January 15 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous fight against cancer. Ostap was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and resided in the Hamilton-Trenton area most of his life. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1978 and attended Dartmouth on a full scholarship. Malcolm Wright ’82 lived with Ostap freshman year in McLane, and writes, “It saddens me to learn of Ostap’s death. I have nothing but fondness for him, though our lives diverged completely after that year.” Ostap later obtained a master’s at Rutgers University. He worked as a project manager in the construction field, where he built beautiful homes, managed construction sites, and traveled up and down the East Coast and to Hawaii. Ostap was always researching historical facts about Ukraine. He was a member of St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and sang in its choir. Ostap is survived by his father, Bohdan, and his wife, Maria; stepbrother Roman; cousin Lydia and her husband, Ken; cousin Leo; niece and nephews Erika, Philip, Michael, and Matthew; aunt Myroslawa and her husband, Donald; as well as extended family in Ukraine. Contributions in Ostap’s memory may be made to St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1195 Deutz Ave., Trenton, NJ 08611, or to the American Cancer Society.
