John E. Fisher ’74

John E. Fisher ’74 died unexpectedly on December 13, 2018, in New Haven, Connecticut. John grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, spent summers on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and came to Dartmouth having attended Kingswood School in West Hartford, Connecticut. At Dartmouth he was an economics major and participated in a French foreign study program. He played lacrosse and was a member of Sigma Nu Delta and Sphinx. John remained involved with Dartmouth throughout his life, volunteering as an alumni admissions interviewer, class agent and officer, and regional club officer. After college he worked in Seattle and Alaska in the insurance industry. Later he worked for Cape Dory Yachts and went on to graduate studies at Babson College in Massachusetts. Following a long career in finance in Boston and on Wall Street, John embraced his entrepreneurial spirit and his talent for craftsmanship to start a window treatment business in Westport, Connecticut. John had a lifelong passion for boating and loved sailing. He both captained and crewed on various vessels in New England waters, Bermuda, the Caribbean, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. He had recently completed a lengthy and loving restoration of a 1976 Blackfin boat. He is remembered as a fiercely independent man who took great pride in his work and was known for his attention to detail, focus on service, and generous nature. John is survived by his wife, Alison, and sons Greg and Jack.
