John Augustus Merritt Jr. ’54

John Augustus Merritt Jr. ’54 passed away on November 17, 2018, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. John came to Dartmouth from Greenwich, Connecticut, where he attended Greenwich High School. At Dartmouth he was a chemistry-zoology major and a member of the Interdormitory Council and the Glee Club. After receiving his M.D. from Yale Medical School, John completed a residency and fellowship at Boston City Hospital. He then served two years in the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio, Texas, at the School of Aerospace Medicine. Upon discharge he returned to Boston City Hospital as the director of the blood bank. John earned American board certifications in geriatric medicine, hematology, and internal medicine and was a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was an assistant professor of medicine at Yale University, the University of Massachusetts, and Tufts University medical schools. John served as chief of medicine at Worcester (Massachusetts) City Hospital and at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut, where he was the first chief of geriatric medicine. John’s wife, Marilyn, predeceased him. He is survived by his children, Mary Beth, Gail, John, and Nancy.
