Edward P. Tolley Jr. ’51

Edward P. Tolley Jr. ’51 died on November 15, 2018, in White Plains, New York. He was a decorated veteran of the Korean War, a corporate lawyer, an outdoorsman, and an accomplished amateur carpenter who built his summer cottage in Quogue on Long Island, New York. Two of his four children were also Dartmouth graduates, Brook ’82 and Edward III ’84. Ed majored in English literature at Dartmouth and was a senior fellow. He was a member of Psi Upsilon and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation he served for two years in the U.S. Army as a sergeant, first class, in the infantry in Korea. He was awarded two Bronze Star medals and several other decorations. Ed earned his law degree at night from New York University while serving as a Latin American export manager for a division of Vick Chemical Co., balancing graduate study with frequent business trips to Vick’s Latin American operations. He practiced corporate law for more than 40 years, including long stints with Cravath, Swaine & Moore and Brown, Wood, Ivey, Mitchell and Petty in New York City and Paris. Sailing around Long Island and on the high seas was a lifelong love. Ed was a member of the Port Washington and Knickerbocker yacht clubs. Hiking, skiing, tennis, bicycling, and swimming were also important parts of his life. He served as a director of the Adirondack Mountain Club and enjoyed coaching youth football and baseball.
