Joan Perry Snell ’73

Joan Perry Snell ’73 died on April 3, 2017, at Kendal in Hanover. Joan was a graduate of the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, where she met her husband, J. Laurie Snell, who was a graduate student at Princeton. She came to Hanover in 1954 when her husband accepted an appointment to the mathematics faculty at the College. Joan conducted local singers and instrumentalists in Upper Valley venues such as the Snell’s barn, the Norwich (Vermont) Congregational Church, Tracy Hall in Norwich, Rollins Chapel, Howe Library in Hanover, and Kendal. She was one of the founders of the Norwich Arts Association, and her major productions included conducting all 209 of Bach’s cantatas and Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah. As a faculty spouse, Joan took courses through the years at the College, and ultimately graduated as an English major and a member of the first coeducational class of 1973. She was a very competitive player of tennis and ping-pong and a student of all things Shakespeare. Joan is survived by children John and Mar, and three grandchildren. Memorial gifts may be made in her name to the Hurd Fund at the Howe Library, 13 South St., Hanover, NH 03755.
