Donald J. Clausing ’68

Donald J. Clausing ’68 died peacefully at his home in San Francisco September 12, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Emmy, and daughters Nicole ’92 and Hilary. Don was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, grew up all over the world in a military family, and came to Dartmouth from Hanover High School. At Dartmouth he was an English major, a member of Sigma Nu Delta and The Players, worked at WDCR, and participated in the Camera Club. He was in ROTC as well as the mountain and winter warfare group. While at Dartmouth he enjoyed Professor Matt Wysocki’s design courses, long recalling Wysocki’s advice: “If you have to explain it, it’s not ready yet.” After college Don served two years in the Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and then earned a master’s in museum practice from the University of Michigan. A lifelong love of airplanes proved stronger than the pull of art curation, however, and he found his way into civilian aviation, eventually captaining L-1011s for American Trans Air. He battled cancer for two and a half years, and lived long enough to attend his 50th college reunion and celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary.
