John Chester Klein ’52

John Chester Klein ’52 passed away in Cleveland on July 23, 2018. John was born on February 17, 1930, in Cleveland and graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1948. At Dartmouth he majored in economics, was a member of Gamma Delta Chi, and worked for WDBS, the college radio station. He then served for two years in the U.S. Navy, mostly aboard ship in the Atlantic and Caribbean. Following discharge he returned to Cleveland and joined the family business, Wovenright Inc. Just a few years later, in 1958, his father passed away and John decided to liquidate the business. He then entered the insurance business, serving for a number of years with New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. and earning a chartered life underwriter degree in 1963. A dozen years later, in 1976, he became involved with Robin Hood Camp, a boys and girls camp in central New Hampshire. This became a full-time occupation when he became owner, “chief camper” and “director of fun.” John was a sports enthusiast, athlete, playwright, and director of shows for the Oakwood Country Club in Cleveland. John was an active Dartmouth alumnus in Cleveland, serving in numerous roles. He married later in life, on February 19, 2000, to Joan, who predeceased him in 2011. Stepchildren Susann, Cathy, Terry, Bonnie, and Leslie and seven grandchildren survive him.
