James Howard Reynolds ’51

James Howard Reynolds ’51 died in Hamilton, New York, on May 14, 2017. He spent 32 years as a professor of psychology at Colgate University and more than 50 years in Hamilton, which he described as “an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family.” Howie was a psychology major at Dartmouth and a member of Zeta Psi. He and his wife, Shirley, were married during his senior year, living in Wigwam Village. Shirley served as a nurse at Dick’s House. Following four years as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, Howie earned a master’s in psychology from Rutgers and a Ph.D. at Syracuse University. He completed a postdoctoral year at the University of California, Berkeley, Institute of Human Learning. Human learning and memory were lifelong interests. Howie’s career at Colgate included teaching, research, and administration; he served as chair of the psychology department and as a division head. He started Colgate’s computer center and authored a book, Computing in Psychology: Introduction to Programming Methods and Concepts. Besides his wife, Howie is survived by three children, nine grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Sons Jim ’75 and Jeff ’77 and granddaughter Gretchen ’07 are Dartmouth alums. The Reynolds family were avid travelers, mostly by car; they visited all 50 states and 20 countries. He enjoyed flying his Cessna 150 airplane, trout fishing, and playing the guitar and was active as a volunteer in the Hamilton community.
