Joseph Lindner Jr. ’51

Joseph Lindner Jr. ’51 died on July 22, 2018, in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He was a medical doctor, a professor of internal medicine, a hospital administrator, and an executive search consultant specializing in recruitment of senior healthcare professionals. Joe attended the Asheville School in North Carolina, where he later became a member of the board of trustees and a lifelong contributor. At Dartmouth he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi and Casque & Gauntlet. He earned a medical degree at the University of Cincinnati, where he later was a member of the faculty of the school of medicine and vice president for medical affairs. During his years in Cincinnati he initiated the first residency program in emergency medicine. He served for two years as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy. Joe’s interest in management led him to attend the Harvard School of Public Health, from which he received a master’s in 1976. He became president of St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, New Jersey. He retired in 1995 to Hilton Head. Joe loved life and was usually the life of the party. On Hilton Head he golfed and served as an elder in his church. He traveled widely with his wife, Doris, also a physician, making it a point to sample the “best” hamburgers in all 50 states. In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by two children, including Laura ’86, and five grandchildren.
