Louis F. Oldershaw ’39

Louis F. Oldershaw ’39 died October 19, 2018, at his home in South Hadley, Massachusetts, surrounded by his family. He came to Dartmouth from Kingswood-Oxford School, graduated from Tuck in 1940, and attended Yale Law School. He married Virginia Wakelin in 1940. He then served as a Navy lieutenant aboard the destroyer USS Nelson, which was engaged in the invasion of Normandy and badly damaged by enemy fire. After the war Lou formed a law practice with Russell Davenport and William Millane, where he practiced law until 1964. He then joined National Blank Book Co., serving as president until 1978; when it merged with Dennison Manufacturing Co., he served as group vice president and director until 1983. He then joined the law firm of Bulkley, Richardson, and Gelinas in Springfield, Massachusetts, as counsel. He served his community as president of the Greater Holyoke YMCA, Holyoke Rotary Club, and WGBY-TV in Springfield; director of Holyoke Community College Foundation; trustee of Mt. Holyoke College; and on the boards of the United Way, Holyoke Hospital, and the American Red Cross. Lou was awarded the Paul Harris Rotary Award, the Holyoke Community College Distinguished Service Award, and the William G. Dwight Distinguished Service Award. He is survived by sons Peter, Robert, and David; grandchildren Jamie, Andrew, Lindsay, Alex, David, William, and Catherine; and great-grandsons J.J., Luke, and Derek. He was predeceased by his wife in 1999.
