Clifford Douglas Croom ’75

Clifford Douglas Croom ’75 passed away at the Fort Sanders Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, on March 20 after a battle with cancer. Clifford was a resident of Los Angeles and born and raised in Knoxville, where he graduated with honors from Holston High School. He received a full academic scholarship to Dartmouth and graduated at the top of his class with a degree in German. Clifford was a professional translator who spoke seven languages, including German, Russian, French, Spanish, and Tongan. He utilized his linguistic expertise in a variety of capacities. During his career he was an interviewer for the Rand Corp., a tour guide at the United Nations, a translator for the U.S. State Department, a multi-language auditor for Deutsche Bank, and a field communications expert as a U.S. Army intelligence officer. He was president of Emancipated Speech Projects, a full-service translation and interpreting company. He was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by four sisters, two brothers, and a large extended family of in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
