Richard Lee Scherff ’59

Richard Lee Scherff ’59 died on March 27. He entered Dartmouth from Lincoln High School in Canton, Ohio, majored in history, and was a member of Alpha Theta and Glee Club. Following graduation Dick received first a master’s and later a Ph.D. in education, both from Teacher’s College at Columbia. During his time at Columbia he served on the administrative staff of the business and medical schools. In 1977 Dick and his wife, Susan, and their two children moved to Sparta, New Jersey, and he began a career in financial planning and employee benefits. He was an active member of his communities in New York City and in Sparta. Among other activities, he served as chair of the board of Riverside Church in New York City and as a member of the Sparta school board. He played on the freshman golf team at Dartmouth, and was an avid golfer throughout his life. He and Sue retired to Pinehurst, North Carolina, in the early 2000s. He leaves Susan; children Susan and Richard and his wife, Jenny; and two grandchildren.
