Lee T. Hirschey ’57
Lee T. Hirschey ’57 passed away peacefully on May 24 at the Glenridge in Sarasota, Florida. Lee graduated from Manlius Military Academy in DeWitt, New York. At Dartmouth he was a brother of Zeta Psi, a member of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council, and a manager of the swim team. He was an Army ROTC cadet major and commander of the drill team. Lee graduated with an A.B. from Dartmouth and an M.B.A. from Tuck School. His business career began with Container Corp. of America and soon after he returned to the family paperboard and packaging business, Climax Manufacturing Co. in Castorland, New York. Lee held various positions, was promoted to president, and in 1971 became CEO. For more than 48 years Lee and his brother, Urban, ran Climax. They retired upon sale of the company in 2008. Lee was dedicated to northern New York. He was elected to the Carthage school board, the Carthage Area Hospital board, and the local boys club. He also joined the board of the Development Authority of Northern New York and the Northern New York Community Foundation. He was an active member of the Young Presidents Organization, which took him around the world. Lee was an avid sailor on Lake Ontario, the Eastern Seaboard, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific. He enjoyed skiing at Stowe, Vermont, and Aspen, Colorado. He is survived by Deborah, his devoted wife of 42 years, two children, two stepchildren, many grandchildren, and his brother.
