George Roland Fitzgerald ’54

George Roland Fitzgerald ’54 passed away on June 20. George came to Dartmouth from East Jaffrey, New Hampshire, where he attended Conant High School. At Dartmouth he was a government major and a brother of Phi Sigma Kappa. George was co-captain of the cheerleaders and a member of the Undergraduate Council, DOC, Aquinas House, and Air Force ROTC. After serving as an officer in the Air Force for two years, he attended St. Paul’s College and Catholic University, studying philosophy and theology. In 1965 he was ordained a priest with the Paulist Fathers, Congregation of St. Paul the Apostle. He served as Catholic chaplain and teaching fellow at Tufts University; instructor in theology at Boston University; and president of St. Paul’s College in Washington, D.C. George had pastoral duties at Toronto, New York City, Boston, D.C., and Chicago. He became editor of Paulist Press, the largest Catholic publishing house in the world. He left Paulist Press in 1980, moving to the University of California, Berkeley, where he led Newman Hall-Holy Spirit Parish. In 1992 George became pastor at St. Thomas Aquinas University parish at the University of Colorado. In 1998 he retired, spending time between Vail, Colorado, and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
