John U. Farley ’57

John U. Farley ’57 died of dementia on April 30 at his condo in Hanover. John graduated from West High School in Cleveland. At Dartmouth he majored in Russian civilization and was historian and social chairman of Gamma Delta Chi, a member of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council, and lacrosse manager. He belonged to the Russian Club, serving as vice president. John graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Finding a limited market for Russian majors, an aptitude for statistics, and an interest in international business, John went to Tuck School, graduating in 1959. He spent 20 years on the international business faculty at Columbia University, producing an inventory of books and journal articles, along with an honorary doctorate at the University of Linkoping in Sweden. In 1977 John became executive director of the Marketing Science Institute, an industry-supported research and think tank. In 1990 he became director of the Lauder Institute at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. In 1994 he moved to Hanover, joined the Tuck School faculty, and taught marketing. He also was professor of marketing at a business school in Shanghai, China. John developed an insatiable appetite for travel, which led to published research in several dozen countries on six continents during four decades. He also became an accomplished birder, pursuing his hobby around the world. He is survived by long-term partner, Catherine Cannan, daughters Marilyn ’84 and Pamela, and Catherine’s sister and daughter.
