Stephen Barry Dichter ’64

Stephen Barry Dichter ’64 passed away on February 18 in Lake Worth, Florida, from a rare form of lymphoma. He was born in the Bronx and moved as a child to Roslyn, New York, where he lived most of his life. He came to Dartmouth from Roslyn High School, majored in economics and played four years of varsity baseball. Stephen enjoyed lifelong friendships with his teammates and brothers at Pi Lambda Phi. Upon graduation he was signed by the Yankees and played in their farm system for three years, while completing his M.B.A. at Columbia in the off-seasons. After a period of active duty with the Georgia National Guard, Stephen returned to Roslyn to join the business management division of the New York Telephone Co. He left the phone company to become president of Marlin Machinery Corp., a family business that bought and sold large machinery for steamships and tankers. Stephen is survived by Joan, his wife of 50 years; son Danny and his wife, Jennifer; daughter Jessica and her husband, Jason; and six grandchildren. A simple man whose priorities were family, friends, sports and children, he was active in Roslyn Little League and a significant mentor to many young people, teaching them about life, teamwork and self-confidence. Stephen’s work with youth was his greatest legacy. Joan and Stephen had moved last year from his beloved Roslyn to Florida, where he found old friends and made new ones.
