John David Pope ’54

John David Pope ’54 passed away on January 9. John came to Dartmouth from Swampscott, Massachusetts. He graduated from Kimball Union Academy. At Dartmouth John was a history major and a brother of Kappa Kappa Kappa. After graduation he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and was initially based in Norfolk, Virginia. He served as a lieutenant aboard the USS Charles S. Sperry in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1956, upon discharge, John joined the family business F.W. Webb, in New England. He was named president in 1961, when the company had seven stores and sales of $5 million. Under John’s leadership the company grew to 90 locations with an additional 40 Frank Webb Home locations and sales of $1 billion. He served as the head of the Kimball Union Academy board of trustees, raising tens of millions of dollars and helping to transform the campus. John was a member of the Tadesco Country Club and the Sleepy Hollow Club in Tarrytown, New York, and a founder of the Baker Hill Club in Newbury, New Hampshire. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Jinny. He is survived by children Jeff ’80, Steve ’80, Tracy and Nanny ’86.
