Jerold F. Lucey ’48

Jerold F. Lucey ’48 died on December 10, 2017, in Sarasota, Florida. He served in the U.S. Navy, graduated from Dartmouth, where he was in the Navy V-12 program, and New York University medical school. He spent his working career at the University of Vermont (UVM) medical school and medical center, where he was the Harry Wallace Professor of Neonatology. He served for a record 35 years as the editor-in-chief of the journal Pediatrics. During his long and illustrious career, Jerry earned just about every honor and award possible in the fields of pediatrics and neonatology. His contributions were monumental and resulted in millions of preterm infants not just surviving but thriving. His vision to see the importance of collaborating with other neonatal intensive care units led him to found the Vermont Oxford Neonatal Network, which now includes 1,000 neonatal intensive care units around the world. Beyond his work, he loved his wife of 45 years, Ingela, his children, chocolate chip cookies, basketball from Larry Bird and the Celtics to Tom Brennan and the UVM Catamounts, reading the Sunday New York Times and the view from his home on Lake Champlain. Jerry will be missed by all who worked with him or benefited from his care, especially his wife; children Colleen, Cathy, David and Patrick and their spouses; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and friends Buzz and Dona Land.
