Steve Waterhouse ’65

Steve Waterhouse ’65 passed away in New York City on December 8, 2017, after a brief battle with brain cancer. Steve was “The Godfather” of the class, says Ken McGruther ’65. “Whatever successes we have had as a class, in terms of unity, giving, special projects—Steve has usually been behind them.” Stu Keiller ’65 added, “Steve was a true son of Dartmouth. He embodied the spirit of Dartmouth from his days as our Indian mascot on through his many class projects,” including CarniVail, books Dartmouth’s Dedicated Alumni (2004) and Passion for Skiing (2010), and the accompanying 2013 film, Passion for Snow, which won an Emmy nomination. His devotion to cultural and academic causes extended beyond Dartmouth, as he was a benefactor of Leighton House, Royal Opera House, Tate Gallery and Vail Dance Festival; an advisor to Said Business School at Oxford University; and a trustee of the Colorado Ski Museum. After Dartmouth and a Tuck M.B.A., Steve began his career in international business, eventually founding and managing the executive search and management consulting company, Hanover Partners Inc. of New York and London. Though he traveled the world on business, London, England, New York City, Vail, Colorado, and his primary residence in Hanover were his favorite homes. Eighteen classmates and wives—as well as Linda, his wife of 50 years, children Melinda and James and daughter-in-law Desmarie—attended Steve’s memorial service in Hanover on January 6.
