Gordon B. Evans ’57
Gordon B. Evans ’57 passed away in his sleep on October 27, 2017, at home in Portland, Oregon. “Pick” was born in Wisconsin and, although he moved to Portland when he was 13, was a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. At Lincoln High School he was an outstanding scholar and a Shrine All-Star football player. At Dartmouth he was a history major and a member of the Dartmouth Christian Union. He kept his Phi Tau/Phi Sigma Kappa brothers fit as its athletic chairman, was a member of Kappa Phi Kappa (future teachers society) and enrolled in the Army ROTC program. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a lieutenant, serving in Army Intelligence stationed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he met and married Patricia (“Peeta”), his wife of 47 years until her passing in 2007. Pick and Peeta moved to Portland and he pursued a career as a social studies teacher (which he loved) at Beaverton High (1960-68) and Sunset High (1968-94). While teaching he earned a master’s in education at the University of Oregon and that led to a passionate devotion to Ducks athletics. Pick was devout in his faith as a member of the First Presbyterian Church for nearly 70 years. He was a church elder, deeply involved with the married couples fellowship. He is survived by his sister, four children and their spouses, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, whom he supported in their academic and athletic endeavors.
