George Graboys ’54

George Graboys ’54 passed away on December 16, 2017, in Providence, Rhode Island. George came to Dartmouth from Fall River, Massachusetts. He graduated from Tabor Academy. At Dartmouth he was an economics major and a brother of Pi Lambda Phi. George obtained a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Washington Finance Corp., a loan and investment company that was later acquired by Citizens Trust Co. in Providence. He started at Citizens as a vice president in charge of creating an asset-based lending department. He became president of Citizens in 1975 and then chairman in 1984. In 1986 George negotiated the sale of Citizens to Royal Bank of Scotland Group. He retired as chairman and chief executive officer in 1992. George was active in his community. In 1990 the Anti-Defamation League of New England gave him the Torch of Liberty Award in recognition of his community service and efforts on behalf of minorities. He served as chairman of the Rhode Island Foundation and was a founding member, chairman and director of the Children’s Crusade for Higher Education. He also served as chairman of the Rhode Island Urban Project and served on the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education, the United Way of Southeastern New England, Miriam Hospital, the International Institute of Rhode Island and the National Conference of Christians and Jews. George was also a national director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. George is survived by his wife, Lois, and children Ken, Jim and Angela.
