William Joseph Zaphiris ’52
William Joseph Zaphiris ’52 passed away on December 23, 2016, in Corry, Pennsylvania, surrounded by his family. He was born William Zafiropulos on March 27, 1930, in Corry, and changed his name as an adult. He was class president of Corry High School in his junior and senior years. At Dartmouth he was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa. He later transferred and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University, where he earned an architectural degree. As a registered architect he worked for architectural firms in New York, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. His building projects included St. Elizabeth Parish Center and Newman Center for Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. He also worked at American Sterilizer and Erie Insurance in Erie, Pennsylvania. Bill was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Corry and served as past president of the Corry Alumni Association. Bill was most renowned in Corry as owner of the Ritz Chocolate and Candy Co. (formerly Ritz Restaurant, founded by his parents). Bill is survived by his wife, Margaret, whom he married on October 31, 1959. Bill is also survived by children Therese, William, Peter, Anne, Christopher, Margaret, Jim, John and Mary; their spouses; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
