Edwin Thomas “Ted” Rice ’52

Edwin Thomas “Ted” Rice ’52 of North Stonington, Connecticut, passed away on July 12, 2017, at Westerly Hospital after a brave battle with Parkinson’s disease. Ted was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on June 11, 1930. He attended Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, Connecticut, before attending Dartmouth, where he majored in engineering at Thayer School and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He was also on the freshman swimming team. Immediately after graduating with his master’s in engineering, Ted was wed to Polly Tuttle. He was an active alumnus, serving as an admissions interviewer, local alumni club officer and alumni councilor. His career path took him to Pratt & Whitney Aviation, the family business of Goddard and Rice Insurance, Connecticut Bank and Trust Co. as a vice president of the trust department and his final and most loved workplace, the Mystic Seaport. It was there he felt a sense of pride and accomplishment in working and teaching at one of the greatest maritime museums in the United States. Ted is survived by Polly, daughters Laurie (and her husband, Jim) and Jeanne, four granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Ted was predeceased by his son, Tom. Ted’s father, Charles ’23, uncle Alfred ’26 and cousin John Ives ’51 were also Dartmouth graduates.
