David Alan Brew ’52

David Alan Brew ’52 of Los Altos, California, passed away on November 7, 2017, just two weeks shy of his 87th birthday, November 22. A native of Ithaca, New York, David graduated from Ithaca High School in 1948, from Dartmouth in 1952 with a degree in geology and from Stanford University in 1964 with a Ph.D. in geology. He was a lifelong field geologist, mapping and studying a great variety of geologic situations in Colorado, Utah, the Alps, the Himalayas, and especially southeast Alaska. His geologic studies resulted in authorship or coauthorship of more than 200 peer-reviewed published maps, articles and books. He held multiple positions in the U.S. Department of the Interior, including the leadership of the scientific team that produced the first large-scale environmental impact statement, describing the likely outcomes of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. He is survived by his wife, Sally; daughter Betsy ’81 and her husband, Bob VanWetter ’81; daughter Perrin ’83 and her husband, Brian Stewart ’81; daughter Kate ’87 and her husband, Jeff; daughter Emily ’89 and her wife, Miel; and five granddaughters and three grandsons.
