Charles Gilbert Allen ’52

Charles Gilbert Allen ’52 passed away on June 29, 2017, in Barre, Massachusetts, his lifelong home. He was born on December 30, 1930, and graduated from Barre High School before enrolling at Dartmouth. He was a history major and, after graduating from Dartmouth, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in the 45th infantry division during the Korean conflict. Following his military service Charlie returned to Barre and spent his career working at the Chas. G. Allen Co. Inc., eventually retiring as general manager. He held many leadership roles in local service organizations, including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Korean War Veterans Association. Charlie had a passion for showing his award-winning Morgan horses. He was a dedicated historian with specific interest in U.S. and local history. In 2011 he sponsored the Barre Historical Society’s Allen Gallery, which houses historical artifacts and exhibits of local industries. Charlie served the youth of his community as a member of the Quabbin Regional School committee and by sponsoring a Little League baseball team. For many years he was a trustee of Barre Savings Bank. His wife of 59 years, Alice, died in 2014. He is survived by sons Charles V, Michael, James, John and William and their families, including 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
