William G.S. McKee Jr. ’54

William G.S. McKee Jr. ’54 passed away on September 20, 2017, in Ingram, Texas. Gary came to Dartmouth from Venetia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the George School. At Dartmouth Gary was a brother of Sigma Chi and a public administration major. He was a member of the Undergraduate Council, Vigilantes and the track team and served as sophomore class president. After graduation he served in the U.S. Navy in the 11th Naval Headquarters in San Diego and then as a personnel man on the USS Talladega. Gary had certifications from Texas A&M, City College of New York and San Antonio College, where he later taught. He eventually moved to Mexico City, later becoming president of the Dartmouth Club of Mexico. While living in Mexico he was part of the management team of Denny’s Restaurant and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Gary then built his own chain, called Chicken-Itza. He moved from Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende, where he began the “internationally famous” restaurant, La Flama. He worked with the governor of San Luis Potosi to establish the green areas of Tangamanga State Park and the development of the first reforestation project of dry-weather pine trees in Mexico. Gary is survived by Kathie Minor, sons William and Michael and daughter Karen.
