Willard Dean Merrill ’49

Willard Dean Merrill ’49 died on October 12, 2017, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Dean came to Dartmouth in July 1943 from Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts. After his freshman year he spent 19 months in the Pacific Theater before returning to graduate in 1949. He rejoined the Marines for 21 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1967. Dean then moved to Woodstock, Vermont, where he built and managed the Woodstock Inn for Laurence Rockefeller and raised purebred Angus cattle at his Felicity Farm. Dean was predeceased by his wife, Lorrie. He is survived by daughters Janet and Laurel and son Frederic.
